All About The Shoes

Turtleneck color selected because of shoes?
Check.
Cardigan added because temperatures dropped 40 degrees overnight and the grey complimented shoe color?
Check.
Boyfriend jean to show off the gorgeous plaid?
Check.

This outfit was all about the shoes.
Brand new JCrew shoes I thrifted in the spring for a mere $10.
I assembled this whole outfit around them.

I love how I am able to stretch my imagination by wearing denim to work.
I've worn these shoes with black cigarette pants, and while they still looked good, somehow the denim gives them that much more.

What piece in your wardrobe do you find you build entire ensembles around?

Back In Black

Wearing all those "Madewell-ish" layers yesterday had me screaming
"I'm meltingggggg....I'm meltingggggg"
All day at work yesterday.
You see we are experiencing an unseasonal heat wave of sorts...temps almost in the 80's again.
And don't even get me started on the humidity!
I absolutely refuse to turn the air conditioning back on, since last week I had the heat on in this house!
Talk about ridiculous!
Heat one week, a/c the next?
Maybe Al Gore really does know what he's talking about!

Needless to say, I decided to dress in cooperation with this unfall like weather and abstain from my familiar layers.
I realized I hadn't worn this cute little shirt I picked up in September, and frankly, since I am normally always cold, a little top like this does not have much shelf life into the latter part of the year.
I am loving the lace backs Express is doing on some of their tops lately....so subtle yet so very sexy.
Sometimes a cute top and great pants is really all you need!

Shopping Your Closet: From Ad To Had!

Have you ever seen an amazingly styled ensemble, and realized that you might not own those exact pieces, but you could put that same look together with items you already have?
I realized this the other night when I received this email from Madewell:

I remembered this navy blue dress from JCrew a few seasons ago and an outfit was born.
As well as a new feature for this blog!

I would love to make this a weekly feature.
And I would love more than anything to spotlight you, my readers, and how you were inspired to replicate a great outfit you saw online, in print, wherever!

Girl Crush

You knew it was coming right?
I mean with all this blabbing about The Velvet Underground, I was bound to share with you my infatuation with Nico.
Albeit a brief relationship, her collaborations with them send me swooning straight over the moon.
Femme Fatale?
All Tomorrow's Parties?
Her voice entrances me almost as much as her beauty.

If she hadn't led such a tragic life of heroin addiction and a young, untimely death, I think I would have wanted to be Nico when I grow up.

Chase The Costumes She Shall Wear

Of 3 things I am sure.
1. I am still obsessed with blazers and wearing them almost daily.
2. I am still infatuated with The Velvet Underground (sans my post title from Venus In Furs).
3. I am being drawn to soft neutrals lately as witnessed here and here.

I saw this dress at F21 the other day.
I don't even know why I went in there.
The only thing I can really look at is the jewelry because the store is usually mobbed and a holy mess.
But it was Friday morning and I had an inkling I would find a treasure in there and lo and behold, I did!
My eyes were instantly drawn to the soft colors and when I saw the draping fabric in the skirt, I was sold.
I knew it needed bold grey tights and my nude heels.
And this vintage tweed blazer I scored last year to add just the right texture.

Femme Fatale

If anyone had told me a year ago that I would be wearing a skirt this short with thigh highs to work I would have scoffed in their face.
I probably would have had a good chuckle if they had also informed me that in the near future I would be working for a different company, one that was young, trendy and fun.

Perhaps it is because of that career change that I am being more daring than I have in over 5 years.
Wearing short skirts and with thigh highs!
Why, I haven't dared to wear something like that since high school!
When I ran around with multi colored, stick up in the air hair and garter belts and thigh highs outside my clothing.
You guys know...you've seen the pictures!
And while I am ever evolving in my personal sense of style, there are some things about me that will never change.
Like my current (re)obsession with the Velvet Underground & Nico.
I.cannot.stop.listening.to.them.
So bear with me as I bombard you with their music, their lyrics and song titles woven into my blog posts.
And as I weave my own way through the much navigated but never charted world of style.
Because a little change is always good, no?

Hits And Misses

I bought this gorgeous tweed vest a few weeks ago and couldn't wait to wear it.
I knew it needed to be worn with a fabulous vintage blouse and some 70's ish flare jeans.
Not a big fan of flare, I scrounged around my closet and dug out this old wide leg pair...no flares to be had in my wardrobe!
As the jeans were not made by the company I work for, I cannot wear them to work so I saved them for a day off of shopping.
When I took these photos when I got home, I wasn't crazy about the overall look.
It looked ok in the mirror, but in the photos....blah.
The denim needed to be darker, flared....just better.
And the vest?
Should it be buttoned, open....not really sure....just not loving it.
This week I thrifted a great blouse that was literally made for my tweed vest.
So I gave it another go around.

don't you just love that lace racerback? sooo sexy!

With a black pencil skirt, aubergine tights and booties...this time around was definitely the hit!
Happy Weekending Everyone!
As for me, I have the weekend off and am having our annual Halloween Party tomorrow!

Shopping Secrets Divulged....

Shhhhhhh......don't tell anyone else what I am about to tell you....please???
I mean, people might look at me weird or something.
Think I am strange.
But the truth of the matter is....
I am an aesthetic shopper.
A visual girl to say the least.

Which means my friends, that I cannot shop for clothing in sale pits sections.
I can only shop for vintage on racks of mish mosh apparel.
And only in stores that size it. Sorry Goodwill!
Oh sure, I love a good bargain...but unless a fabric, color, texture pops out to me from a side hanging sale mess rack...I can't bring myself to dig through it.

This also means I am a terrible online shopper.
Actually, I hardly shop online at all.
If I cannot touch it, feel it, hold it in my hands...I can barely be interested in it.
This doesn't mean I don't peruse websites.
I certainly do!
But only the pages where items are styled and shot fashion magazine-like.
It has to come to life for me to catch my interest.

So imagine my delight when I received this email from Anthropologie?
Being the very finicky visual  shopper I am, I swooned and swooned over these little video clips that made me want to whip out the credit card and buy each item.

My favorites?
See for yourself....

PSA (Thanks Google!)

After much trial and tribulation...aka discovering that the upgrades to Blogger meant informing me that I have used up all the free picture space I had and that to continue posting pics on my blogs I would have to pay them for more space, I did so in order to share this.

Enjoy!

And thanks Google! I can promise that I will use up every single one of the 10,000 pic space I bought tonight!

Just Pile It On

Clearly I love layers.
And if you are always freezing cold like I am, then my guess is you do too.
I am off today.
Off running last minute Halloween errands...our big party is this Saturday night!
Squee!

Check in later tonight at my entertaining blog, Suburban Soirees to see an awesome DIY project for Halloween that kept me busy almost all afternoon!

Candid

I started taking these pictures in the few minutes of downtime I get before I start cooking dinner.
I fully intended to write about my way of casual dressing...how my form of casual is so very different than the sea of velour tracksuits and sweatpants I live around.
As I took them, my daughter surprised me again saying "Mama, I just want to be with you."
And so I ended up with a bevvy of candid shots of the two of us again.

You know what?
Telling you all about my outfit no longer seemed important.
Scheduling this post for tomorrow morning seems silly.
Because this is what I love most about my life.
And this is more important to share than sharing my adventures thrifting this shirt.
Or how that anonymous girl inspired me to wear another pair of vintage earrings.
Or remind you how much I love camel again.
Oh sure, I love blogging about style and clothing.
But most of all I love this little girl.
